Fall Gutter Maintenance Checklist: What to Inspect and Clean

Here’s a step-by-step checklist for your fall gutter maintenance:

Clear Debris from Gutters:

Safety First: Use a sturdy ladder and wear gloves. Never work on a ladder in wet or windy conditions. Consider professional gutter cleaning for safety.

Remove Leaves, Twigs, and Debris: Use your hands (with gloves), a gutter scoop, or a garden trowel to remove all leaves, twigs, branches, and other debris from the gutters.

Flush with Water: After removing debris, use a garden hose to flush out the gutters and downspouts. This will help clear any remaining smaller debris and check for clogs.

Inspect for Damage and Issues:

Check for Leaks and Seams: Look for any leaks, cracks, or gaps in the gutter seams and joints.

Inspect Downspouts: Ensure downspouts are securely attached and direct water away from your foundation. Check for clogs in downspouts as well.

Examine Gutter Hangers and Fasteners: Make sure gutters are securely attached to the fascia board. Loose or sagging gutters need attention.

Look for Rust or Corrosion (for metal gutters): Rust can weaken metal gutters and lead to leaks or failure.

Repair or Replace Damaged Gutters:

Minor Repairs: Small leaks or seams can sometimes be sealed with gutter sealant.

Section Replacement: Significantly damaged sections of gutter may need to be replaced.

Complete Gutter Replacement: If your gutters are old, heavily damaged, or consistently problematic, consider a full gutter replacement for a more long-term solution.
